FAQ's

  • - What is a Root Canal Treatment?

Endodontic treatment or Root Canal Treatment treats the inner part of the tooth, that is the canals that are confined in the roots of the teeth. When caries reach the nerve of the tooth, bacteria infect the nerve and gradually the nerve ‘dies’ (becomes necrosed). This is usually followed by severe pain. After that, bacteria infect the surrounding bone. Slowly they form a cystic infection on the bone. The indicated treatment is a Root Canal Treatment. Root Canal treatment cleans the bacteria from within the root canals. This is obtained by use of small instruments that look like needles. After the canals are cleaned, they are filled and sealed with a material that prevents the bugs from reestablishing in the area. At this point , Root Canal Treatment is finished. A crown should be placed on the tooth right after the Root Canal Treatment. Now the tooth is healthy and functional in the mouth. See how it is done

  • - Does a Root Canal Treatment hurt?

The whole procedure is done under local anesthesia, so it is completely painless for the patient. Anesthesia is administered by use of a computer in a painless manner and no needle is visible. Even the scary sound of the ‘drill’ is virtually diminished. So, unlike obsolete and painful techniques that were used in the past, in modern Root Canal Treatment pain or even tenderness DO NOT occur in any part of the procedure. See Testimonials

  • - Why do I need a Root Canal Treatment?

The main reasons for a Root Canal Treatment is deep caries that have reached or infected the nerve of the tooth or bacteria that have established in the root canals and have infected the tooth or/and the surrounding bone. Also, sometimes your dentist refers you to an Endodontist to have a Root Canal Treatment on a tooth which has no pathology, but is going to be used to place a crown or bridge on it and it needs to be modified in shape.

  • - Why did my previous Root Canal Treatment fail?

On certain occasions, previous root canal treatment may have failed to clean the bacteria completely from within the root canals and therefore infection appeared again. There are many reasons for that: the roots of the tooth are severely curved and technically it is not easy to fully clean them, the filling of the previous treatment is inadequate to seal the canals, a crown was not placed right after the previous treatment, reappearance of caries on the tooth, crack of the tooth etc. As a result, the remaining bacteria caused a new infection in the tooth or swelling on the gums. The indicated treatment now is a Retreatment.

  • - What is a Retreatment?

If a root canal treatment fails, the Endodontist may suggest Retreatment as the indicated treatment. This is necessary to keep the tooth functional and avoid extraction. The procedure involves the removal of the previous root canal fillings, disinfection of the canals and finally a new proper filling of the full length of the canals (up to the tip of the root). See how it is done. That is the end of the retreatment. A crown should be placed right after the retreatment. If the Endodontist determines that a retreatment cannot be done, then Microsurgery/Apicoectomy is the treatment of choice.

  • - What is Microsurgery/Apicoectomy?

On certain occasions, the Endodontist determines that a retreatment cannot be done because of technical, esthetic or financial reasons. In other cases, patients have had repeated retreatment procedures on the same tooth with no favourable result. In all these cases, Microsurgery/Apicoectomy is the treatment of choice. Modern Microsurgery has a success rate of 90-100% for procedures like apicoectomy, repair of iatrogenic errors ( perforations, removal of broken files etc). In this way teeth that were up to now condemned to extraction , can now be effectively treated. I would like to inform you that the procedure has virtually no pain after the surgery, it is very well tolerable by the patient and the patient can go to work the next day. As a result, patients who have gone through repeated visits to a dentist trying to save a tooth, can now save their tooth predictably in only 1 visit. See Testimonials. See how it is done.

  • - Who does all these procedures?

Your Dentist has been trained to perform a root canal treatment. In certain complexed cases, however, consultation and treatment by an Endodontist is necessary. Endodontists are trained to perform root canal treatments, retreatments and many other procedures that involve saving the tooth in an optimal way. The Endodontist is a dentist who has gone through an extra 2-3 year University specialty training in Endodontics. The Endodontist works closely together with your Dentist and is the appropriate specialist to consult whether your tooth can be saved or not and what is the best way to save it.

  • - Do you offer any other services apart from Root Canal Treatment and Microsurgery/Apicoectomy?

Our practice is LIMITED to Endodontics and Microsurgery. Following the concept of an Endodontic practice in the US, we are offering only endodontic treatments (See Our Services) and microsurgical procedures. We aim to have a close cooperation and solid relationship with our referring dental practitioners.

  • - What other options do I have except for a Root Canal Treatment?

The alternative to root canal treatment is extraction. The missing tooth can afterwards be replaced by a bridge, a removable partial denture or an implant.

  • - What is an Implant?

An implant is an artificial tooth root (a titamium screw) that is placed in the bone. A few months after that,a new crown is attached and fixed on the implant. An implant + crown can replace one or more missing teeth.

  • - Root Canal Treatment or Implant?

Nothing is the same in looks, sensation and function as your natural tooth. For this reason it is prudent to try to save your tooth. If the attempt to save the tooth fails, an implant is an alternative. The decision will be made during a thorough discussion with your Dentist, Endodontist, or any other specialist involved.
